After the building flooded on Friday morning, the San Marcos Event Center will be closed indefinitely.

The City of San Marcos stated that preliminary reports indicated that the flooding was caused by the disconnection of the 3-inch polyethylene pipe from its coupler. The city added that the disconnection caused the entire facility to flood several inches of water.

At about 3 in the morning, a concerned citizen reported to the San Marcos police after seeing water flowing out of the building at 510 St. Marcos in East Hopkins. Officials from the San Marcos Police Department notified the fire department and the staff were able to shut off the water supply at the event center.

“When the staff arrived, we found that the pipeline had burst and the entire building was flooded,” said Christie Murillo, the administrative coordinator of parks and recreation, in a Facebook video. "Obviously, we will not hold any shows or any events in the event center soon."

The city stated that it is undergoing remediation work. In addition, the city’s insurance company has been notified and is assessing the loss and providing assistance where possible.

The city stated that membership at the event center will be suspended and automatic payments will be suspended, adding that if customers still have items in their lockers, please contact the event center to help retrieve the items.

The city said that the staff at the event center are working hard to find alternative entertainment options and meeting spaces for the community. The Virtual Total Wellness course will continue.

After the flood, the city encouraged residents to use its many sidewalks, trails, and natural areas during the closure of the activity center.

The San Marcos Event Center opened in 1997 after passing a $5.3 million bond election in 1994. The facility celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2017, and its changing rooms, toilets and carpets have recently undergone renovation projects. "Obviously, we don't know the extent of the damage," Murillo said. "We don't know how long we will be closed... If you have a reservation, participate in an event or plan, you can send an email to activitycenterinfo@sanmarcostx.gov to ask any questions. You can call 512-393-8280, The staff can also help you resolve the issue. Follow us on Facebook for any updates. When we can safely reopen, we look forward to seeing you."
